Updates: Homecoming

So, we're all home. We are sleep deprived, and the house is a wreck, and there is new gear and the rooms are rearranged, and we are as desperate to rest at night as we are reluctant to let the baby lie down unwatched; it's not so different really, than coming home with a newborn.

I mean, sure, there's the trach, and the feeding tube, and for the first couple days, the haz-mat treatment for his radioactive diapers, but the sense of hope and dread and the spit-up stains are all more or less familiar.

It's breathtaking to be here. The night before Thomas's brain surgery, Scott brought the stroller up to the hospital room. It felt so daring, like we might be tempting fate just by planning a way to take our baby home again.

This past Thursday night, then, as we rolled the stroller and Thomas down to the elevators and the lobby, I was sure a parade was following us. Getting out of the hospital does not equal getting out of jail free at this point, but man, my heart was singing. In fact, I kept singing to Thomas his favorite little song: "I'm gonna zoom you home again, I'm gonna zoom you home again. I'm gonna zoom you home again, take you ridin' in the car," and he giggled at the "zoom" part like always.
