Tuesday

Good news is, no more NG tube. Bad news is, that's because we just can't make the little guy's stomach settle down.

Instead, Thomas will be getting nutrition (TPN, which means Total Power Network, probably) through a tube in his port from now on.

This violates a phrase I've heard several times now in the hospital, "If the gut works, use it" (I guess they meant Thomas's, but if you've seen us stress-eat in the hosptial you know we're taking this aphorism to heart as well) . . . but it pretty much means that we're off of 24-hour vomit/rip-the-thing-out watch. Overall, we'll chalk it up to the "better idea" column.

Who knows when we'll be coming home, but he has been much happier since this morning. He thew up first thing today, and even when I was holding him he kept fussing. I was starting to worry. Thomas's nurse hadn't met him before, and she didn't seem convinced that it was worth it to try some Tylenol. I can understand this - Tylenol could mask a fever and we need to see those when they happen right now.

That said, I was relieved when an RT* we have had several times came in. She took one look at Thomas and said, "Oh, my goodness, Mr. T, what's wrong today?" and I think her vote, as someone besides the distressed mom, got us some Tylenol in no time.

Even if it means we've lived in the hosptial for too long, it's nice that people know Thomas and are looking out for him. And it's nice that he's so easy to read - it makes everybody's job easier, especially a couple of sleep-deprived parents.
