Late night with T

Thomas is still doing well, although our sleeping schedule is a bit off from the early-morning radiation treatments. We've only had one so far, but it went exactly as they expected, it seems, so that's good news.

He received a G-tube on Friday. That's a gastrostomy - a tube that has been sugically placed into his belly into which we can put liquid food from the outside. He's not ready to eat yet, but this is when we begin transitioning him from the TPN - intravenous nutrition - into "using his gut", something that is a very, very good thing, and fun to say. Nutritionists/dietitians do so all the time.

Also fun to say? Duodenum. That's the upper intestine. Thomas's G-tube doesn't go there (or it'd be a D-tube) but ...still. Try it. Duodenum.

Anyway, we'll be in the hospital several more days as we make sure he's handling the whole full-belly thing well enough.

In a spirit of exhausted lightheartedness, let me now reveal the top five list for tonight . . .

Top Five Things About Being in the Hospital

5. Room service. Sure, the food is pricey, dripping in unneccessary lard, and tastes (mostly, see below) like bad fries, but they bring it right to your door.

4. Seasonal allergies? Hah! You have to go outside to get those.

3. Thomas's fan club - our nurses and techs and housekeepers. It's so fun to have other people to constantly fuss over Thomas and get thrilled when he waves at them and makes noises ...

2. Grits. The grits are almost always good. When was the last time you had good grits?

1. Uninterrupted Thomas-time. Exhausting, yes. But still, he's a pretty fun guy.
