Father's Day Post, Early

So, Scott's always been a hero to me. I know he took great care of the Marines in his platoon when he was enlisted; for a couple years after he got out we would get 3 a.m. phone calls:

"Corporal Bickle? Man, you are just ....you know ... I just ....I just respect you so much, man, Corporal Bickle..."

In the Marine Corps, I have learned, a positive drunk dial is a compliment.

Then there was cancer, where his bravery and patience was admired by doctors, nurses, and Thomas alike. I admit it: I'm jealous of the awe that the nurses showed when he would calmly re-connect whatever part Thomas had painfully pulled out or when he solved the riddle of how to make the medical equipment work properly.

And then yesterday, no lie, and no drunk-dial, I get this call from him:

"Uh, I might be on the news tonight."

"Seriously? Why?"

"I pulled a woman from a burning car."

I shouldn't brag about this here, but he really did, and it didn't make the news, and my husband's a hero. [swoons]

It wasn't a raging blaze or anything, I should point out, but the car in front of Scott got smashed in an intersection. Smoke and then flames started coming out of the hood, and the driver wasn't getting out. Scott tried to get her attention, but she didn't respond, and the door was locked, so he pulled her out of the window.

I am seriously not making this up. He was a little shaken, but asked if I wouldn't mind if he went and saw a movie to chill out (I was home with T). I said I didn't see why not.

....A little while back, a Sunday school teacher remarked on Thomas's easy-going temperament.

"You're a lucky mommy," she said. A friend who knows our story well overheard her, and kind of chortled, thinking of our extremely difficult year.

I think though, I am.

For the record, Channel 8 news here in Dallas interview him, but although I made myself watch the whole broadcast("Did you know that 66% of men would give up a month of sex for a perfect golf swing?"), they never showed the footage.
